CLEVELAND — We're well underway!
The 2023 OHSAA football playoffs are off and running, and following last week's first-round action, 66 Northeast Ohio high schools remain in the hunt for seven separate state championships. We've had mostly chalk so far, although there were some notable upsets Friday night.
Over in Division I, Saint Ignatius shocked Mentor for the second time this season by beating the Cardinals 10-7 on the road. Greg Hanson tallied seven tackles and 1 1/2 sacks as the 12-seed Wildcats get set to face Canton McKinley despite a paltry record of just 3-8.
Down in D-II, it was 12th seeded Twinsburg knocking off rival Nordonia 22-10 on the strength of Jayden Dye's touchdown on offense and interception on defense. Further down the docket, No. 13 Indian Valley bested No. 4 Logan Elm 48-27 in Division IV thanks to Grady Kinsey's 192 rushing yards and three scores, while it was the same in D-VII as St. Paul drubbed Toronto 56-20.
Elsewhere, the favorites held their own, with nationally ranked powerhouses like St. Edward and Massillon Washington cruising to victory. 1-seed Avon did get a scare in Region 6, but pulled away to beat St. John's Jesuit 28-0 behind a strong effort from Matt Maxey.
The second round gets rolling this Friday, the last week where the better seeds will host home games before the matchups head to neutral sites. WKYC has again compiled a comprehensive list of all showdowns involving schools in our viewing area, with such teams listed in bold.
