BARBERTON, Ohio — For the first time in 62 years, Barberton welcomed the mighty Massillon Tigers to its home stadium. It might be a while before they have them back.
Although the Magics fought hard, the talent of Massillon Washington was just too much as the Tigers pulled away 49-24 in WKYC.com's High School Football Game of the Week. Senior running back Terrance Keyes Jr. was the star of the night, rushing for 255 yards and five touchdowns.
The two teams actually went back and forth for much of the first half, and Massillon (8-0) led only 21-16 with just 2:03 to go before intermission. Keyes has already scored twice and would take over from there, running to the end zone again before the break and then twice more in the second half to put things out of reach.
TDs by Ryan Watkins and Charlres Hornacek (the latter on an interception return) kept Barberton (5-3) in the game early. However, the offense struggled to move the ball late and could not keep up with Massillon's firepower.
The Tigers have officially clinched a Division II playoff spot and will host a solid Louisville team next Friday prior to their rivalry showdown with Canton McKinley. The Magics will travel to Tallmadge, and still remain in the D-II postseason hunt as most of the teams directly behind them in Region 6 also lost on Friday night.
