BRUNSWICK, Ohio — It was billed as an even matchup between two conference and county rivals, and it did not disappoint.
The Brunswick Blue Devils held off the Medina Battling Bees 28-21 Friday night in WKYC.com's Game of the Week. Ethan Fritz threw for three touchdowns to three different receivers, while Medina quarterback Drew Allar was picked off four times.
The two teams went back and fourth in the first half, with Fritz tossing scores to Jake Scherette and JD Serwatka while Nick Vadini added one on the ground. Allar connected with Luke Hensley twice, but the Blue Devils led 21-14 at intermission.
Then, disaster, as all-purpose senior Scherette had to be carted off the field with an injury early in the third quarter. Officials later confirmed he had suffered a compound leg fracture, all but assuredly ending his final high school season after just two games.
Brunswick appeared quite shaken after Scherrette left the field, but regrouped with another TD pass from Fritz to Vadini. The two teams mostly held serve from there until Allar hit Brennen Schramm with 5 minutes left to set up a Dorian Boyland scoring run to bring the Bees to within a touchdown.
Medina had two chances to tie the game, but Allar was intercepted by David Hamrick on the first attempt. He got the ball back in his hands with less than 1:30 remaining, but the Bees were stopped on downs at midfield.
Both teams are on the road next week, with 1-1 Brunswick headed to Elyria while 0-2 Medina will be at Strongsville.
