OBERLIN, Ohio — A Friday night high school football matchup between Oberlin City Schools and Wellington High School has been called off.
According to a Facebook post from school officials, the decision was made by Oberlin City Schools Athletics Director Bryce Johnson on Thursday morning.
The decision to cancel the game came after low attendance at practice because of player injuries.
Johnson released the following statement to 3News after the announcement
"Unfortunately, we don't have enough players to field a team for tomorrow. With only 11 able bodies to play (7 kids injured/not cleared), one kid out sick all week and one out of town for a family emergency, we can't safely send our student-athletes out there. We have no intentions of canceling the remainder of our season as the students are not dealing with season-ending injuries.
"On the brighter side of things, we have been putting in a ton of work this past year and this year to make sure our community never deals with this again. Youth football is back for year 2 after being gone for 5+ years and the youth program was able to give our middle school-age kids an opportunity to play this year which in return will bring middle school football back to the program next year after that group has missed multiple years of football. This is just a minor bump in the road."
Wellington announced on Thursday night that they will play the New London Wildcats at home on Friday night.
