CLEVELAND — Look out, west siders!
WKYC will be headed to Cleveland's suburbs Friday night for our High School Football Game of the Week. The matchup between North Olmsted and Westlake won our latest poll, allowing us to feature two programs who are on the rise this season at 3-2.
Following an 0-2 start, the Eagles have won three in a row, including an impressive 40-28 road victory at Buckeye and a smashing 69-14 triumph over Fairview to make themselves unbeaten in the Great Lakes Conference.
Now that we're at the halfway point of the high school football season, we can start to separate the contenders from the pretenders in Northeast Ohio. Senior quarterback Xavier Balson leads the way, with receiver Jared Kelley as his favorite target.
Jason Hall is back coaching the Demons (1-1 GLC) after a three-year absence, and has his team on the cusp of its first non-automatic playoff berth since 2016. The squad is led by the receiving tandem of Will Ostrowski and Cooper Rummel, who have combined for 516 yards and three TDs halfway through the campaign.
This year, 3News will be presenting our Game of the Week during "What's Next" every Friday night, and you have the chance to pick where we travel. We'll announce our four nominees during "Sports Tonight" on Sunday evening and open the voting until noon on Thursday. Our crew will then head to the winning game on Friday, with Nick Camino showcasing expanded highlights of all the action at 11:20 p.m.
We'll see you tonight from University Hospitals St. John Medical Center Stadium!
