KIRTLAND, Ohio — For WKYC's next High School Football Game of the Week, we'll be headed to a familiar destination.
This Friday's featured game will be Lutheran West vs. Kirtland. The two small schools are both 1-0 on the young season, although their recent histories have been a bit different.
West clobbered Fairview 34-0 in Week 1, and is coming off an 8-2 campaign that saw it lose to Perkins 34-14 in the first round of the Division IV playoffs. Now in D-III, the Longhorns are led by sophomore running back Ja'Marrion Banks and two-way lineman Richard Luecke, who is a Division I college recruit on the offensive side.
Re-live Lutheran West's 34-14 win over Independence from last fall:
Meanwhile, Kirtland beat Painesville Harvey 34-8 last Friday to extend its regular-season winning streak to 45 in a row, and had won 55 straight overall before falling to Versailles in last year's D-V state championship game. The Hornets are down to D-VI this season, which could make the road to a title even easier for head coach Tiger LaVerde along with a deep stable of running backs led by his son Phillip along with Tommy Gogolin.
Last Friday, we were in Chardon where the Hilltoppers outlasted Olmsted Falls 14-7 to win their 29th consecutive game. Now, we have four more great games for you to choose from.
This year, 3News will be presenting our Game of the Week during "What's Next" every Friday night, and you have the chance to pick where we travel. We'll announce our four nominees during "Sports Tonight" on Sunday evening and open the voting until noon on Thursday. Our crew will then head to the winning game on Friday, with Nick Camino showcasing expanded highlights of all the action at 11:20 p.m.
We'll see you Friday night in Lake County!
