AVON, Ohio — Any Northeast Ohio high school football fan understands the magnitude of the rivalry between Avon and Avon Lake.
This week, the two west side schools will collide for a second time during this unprecedented football season -- this time with a Division II Region 6 title on the line.
3News sports anchor Nick Camino caught up with Avon head coach Mike Elder this week to talk about his unbeaten football team and their upcoming playoff match up with the Shoremen.
Avon marches into the game with a record of 9-0 on the season and fresh off playoff victories over Highland and Brecksville-Broadview Heights. The Eagles outlasted the Shoremen back on Aug. 29 in a Week 1 showdown that saw the Eagles win 33-30 in overtime.
Avon Lake has not lost a game since that night, being is 8-1 on the year while featuring a defensive unit that is only allowing 9.4 points per game. The Shoremen are trying to avoid a repeat of 2019, when they again lost a Week 1 heartbreaker to the Eagles before falling 20-3 in the regional finals.
