CLEVELAND — After his 50th year at St. Ignatius High School wraps up in 2023, Chuck Kyle will retire from both teaching and coaching. But the number of students and athletes he’s influenced in his time at the school is immeasurable. He sat down with his daughter, 3News' Maureen Kyle, to talk about raising two families: The one on the field and the one at home.
“In all honesty, there is that type of relationship,” he says. “It's not the power of a parent. Come on, that's not it. But it is more than just a friendship. It's the idea that the coach showed that kind of interest in the young kids' development.”
Coach Kyle says the lessons kids learned on the field is something they carried with them through life. Not just the first string, but the second and third string players as well.
“A lot of those guys have gone on to be CEOs of companies, huge successes in life. And they weren't the stars of the team, OK, but what did they learn they learned – well, come on, take your pride throw it in the backseat, get it out of the way. Don't get that silly pride and realize that you're contributing to the group."
