Wadsworth High School’s girls basketball team has proven to be one of the area’s elite this winter, posting a 24-1 overall record and a 14-0 mark in Suburban League National Division play. The Grizzlies were ranked first in the final Associated Press Division I state media poll of the season.

This postseason, Wadsworth is looking to match its poll championship with the program’s second-ever state title.

After defeating Berea-Midpark 80-50 in the Medina district tournament title game on February 25, the Grizzlies are just two wins away from making the program’s fifth state tournament appearance and first since 2006.

Wadsworth, which won its lone state title during the 1996-97 season, is led by senior Jodi Johnson. The senior guard has averaged 18.1 points, six rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.5 assists per contest. Her 1,435 career points ranks second-most in program history.

Johnson, who will continue her hoops career at Ashland University, has helped the Grizzlies post a 96-10 record during her standout four-year prep career.

"Jodi has been a cornerstone of our program for the past four years,” head coach Andrew Booth said. “Jodi is the kind of player that comes around only once in a great while. She is not only a great player, but an even better person and leader for our team. With over a 3.9 GPA, she is the definition of student-athlete."

Wadsworth plays Magnificat in a regional tournament semifinal contest at North Royalton tonight at 7 p.m.
