AKRON, Ohio — They will surely be playing "We Are the Champions" in Wooster Township tonight.
Triway outlasted Jonathan Alder Saturday at Firestone Stadium to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state softball championship. It was the first-ever victory for the Titans in the tournament, and just the second state title for the school in any sport.
Carter Wachtel was the star of the afternoon, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 in a complete-game effort. Haylee Pruitt had an RBI double in the first inning while Emily Yacapraro drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single in the fifth.
Marlee Jacobs pitched well for the Pioneers (26-2) over six innings, but save from a sacrifice fly by Lizzie Lombardi in the fifth the offense struggled to get anything going off Wachtel. Leadoff hitter Danielle Robbins struck out three times, and Wachtel secured the victory with a one-two-three seventh inning.
Triway finishes the season 30-2. It marks the second state championship for the school in less than three months, as the girls bowling team took home the title back in March.
