KENT, Ohio — Fresh off an NCAA Tournament appearance, Kent State extended men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff's contract by three years Wednesday, keeping him through the 2028-29 season.
The 49-year-old coach has guided the Golden Flashes since 2011 and is 247-147 — the winningest and longest-tenured coach in school history.
KSU went 28-7 this season, including 15-0 at home, and won the Mid-American Conference championship. Indiana beat the Flashes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
"Coach Senderoff has done a tremendous job with our men's basketball program and it is exciting to be able to recognize and reward he and his staff," athletic director Randale Richmond said in a statament. "Coach Sendy's teams have excelled on the court, in the classroom and in the Kent community."
Before becoming a head coach, Senderoff was an assistant at Fordham, Yale, Towson, and Indiana. His time with the Hoosiers was marred by a recruiting scandal that resulted in his 2008 resignation (along with head coach Kelvin Sampson) as well as a 30-month show-cause penalty, but he was hired back at KSU soon after and replaced Geno Ford three years later.
During Senderoff's tenure, the Golden Flashes have never had a losing season and have won at least 20 games eight times. They previously earned a MAC regular season co-championship in 2015 and a conference tourney title in '17, with the latter putting them in the "March Madness" bracket.
"I am really appreciative of the continued support that I and our program have received from Randale, President [Todd] Diacon and our Golden Flash community," Senderoff wrote. "I am excited about the future of the program and what we have built and are continuing to grow."
Elsewhere in the area, Kent State rival Akron named a new women's basketball coach last week, hiring Illinois assistant Ryan Gensler to lead the program. Gensler replaces Melissa Jackson, whose contract was not renewed after five seasons despite a .511 winning percentage, the best in school history.
