'I can't wait!': Cleveland baseball fans overjoyed as MLB lockout ends

Patrons at the popular Academy Tavern on the east side are thrilled to be able cheer on the Guardians this year.

CLEVELAND — On Cleveland's east side, there's a historic spot where it's not hard to find some die-hard sports fans.

"If I'm not down at the stadium, then I'll be right here at my local bar," Sean Barker says of the Academy Tavern on Larchmere Boulevard.

"Baseball season spreads throughout the whole city," Jeanne Lyons added. "I mean, every bar in the whole area has baseball on, everybody's talking about baseball. It's a wonderful pastime and we are a big sports town."

With the start of this season up in the air for last 99 days, both Guardians fans and Major League Baseball supporters alike are thrilled with the good news that the league's lockout is over and games will begin in less than a month.

"I can't wait," Sky Fuller said. "It's good for the city. I'm excited about it."

Some fans are even more excited to start the new season as the pandemic continues to wind down.

"To sit in the stands without a mask and to sit close to people and not be afraid and jump up and down, it'll be wonderful," Lyons remarked.

For now, fans are celebrating the best way they know how: In the heart of the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood at their favorite local joint. Academy owner Christopher Butler is also excited about the 2022 season.

"We get dressed up, we always wear the jerseys," he said. "We're always aware of the standings and statistics, so it's really awesome, and we're glad we're able to provide baseball for the community."

And these loyal fans know nothing is better than beer, bar food, and baseball.

"I love baseball," Barker declared. "I'm an American."

"It's wonderful," Lyons gushed. "Cleveland needs this, they really need it, so I'm really happy that its finally here."
