CLEVELAND — Just in time for Father's Day, Cleveland Guardians slugger José Ramírez was placed on the team's paternity list and will miss Saturday and Sunday's games against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Per MLB rules, a player is placed on the paternity list when he chooses to leave the team to attend the birth of his child.
Ramírez and his wife, Rosedith Almonte, have two children, daughter Isabella and son José Jr.
Ramírez's place on the lineup will be filled by outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez, who was called up from the Triple-A Columbus Clippers where he is averaging .307 with an OPS of .935. Rodriguez was named MiLB's International League Player of the Week for June 3-9 and slammed a two-run homer for the Clippers on Thursday night.
Ramírez has been on a torrid start to the 2024 campaign. The third baseman has hit 18 home runs (fifth most in MLB) and 62 RBIS (second most in MLB to the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge).
The Guardians are coming off a 3-1 win over Toronto Friday night. Will Brennan hit a solo home run and scored twice and Logan Allen pitched five innings for his first career win over the Blue Jays as Cleveland sealed their fourth win in five games.
Cleveland has won 11 of its last 16 road games and improved to 23-15 away from home. They will finish off their road trip in Toronto with a 3:07 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1:37 p.m. game on Sunday.
