CLEVELAND — Today is a big day for the Cleveland Guardians as they have a chance to secure a spot in the 2024 MLB Playoffs.
Last night, the Guardians’ magic number to clinch the American League Central Division championship dropped after a thrilling 5-4 walkoff win against the Minnesota Twins in extra innings.
The Guardians also got some extra help on Wednesday night with the Detroit Tigers beating the Kansas City Royals 4-2. The Tigers' win cut Cleveland's Magic number to four.
Now, the Guardians have an 88-65 record and a six-game lead over the second-place Royals.
All eyes will be on the Guards as they take on the Minnesota Twins this afternoon. With a win on Thursday, Cleveland can clinch a playoff spot.
With nine games left in the regular season, any combination of Guardians wins and Royals losses equaling four would hand Cleveland the AL Central Division crown.
Finally, the Guardians' magic number to clinch one of the top two seeds in the American League, securing an automatic first-round bye and a spot in the AL Division Series is at five.
The Guardians will look to lock up their postseason spot today as they take on the Minnesota Twins at 1:10 p.m. from Progressive Field.
Joey Cantillo will be on the mount for the Guardians and Simeon Woods Richardson will be pitching for the Twins.
