The Associated Press reported that, 70 years ago today, a 19-year-old minor league baseball player from St. Louis was on a small attack boat launching rockets at the Germans during the Allied invasion of Normandy.
That would be Lawrence Peter Berra, later known as Yogi.
Berra's age prevented him from traveling to France for the anniversary, but the 89-year-old was honored Friday by the New Jersey museum in Little Falls that bears his name, as well as by the Navy and several veterans groups.
Berra told The AP that D-Day was "amazing" and "awful," firing at the Nazis from 300 yards offshore and he was lucky to survive.
Berra won 10 World Series titles with the New York Yankees.
