ANAHEIM, Calif. — Josh Naylor drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth, Aaron Civale pitched seven strong innings and the Cleveland Indians overcame Shohei Ohtani's latest do-everything performance for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
Jake Bauers homered and Franmil Reyes had an RBI double as Cleveland (23-18) snapped a four-game skid by taking the final two games of the series in Anaheim. Ohtani pitched five-hit ball into the fifth with five strikeouts for the Angels (18-24), and he subsequently moved from the mound to right field for 1 1/3 more innings. The majors' home run leader went 1 for 3 at the plate.
The Tribe struck first on Reyes' double in the first, but Jose Iglesias tied it with a two-bagger of his own in the third before Jared Walsh put LA on top one inning later with his eighth home run. Bauers knotted things back up in the fifth, and eventually it was Naylor's infield single to score José Ramírez that put Cleveland on top for good. It was Naylor's second game-winning hit in as many days.
Civale struck out eight over his seven innings to earn his American League-leading sixth win. Emmanuel Clase then worked a scoreless eighth before James Karinchak picked up his fifth save in the ninth.
Still 2 1/2 games back of the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox, the Indians will return to Cleveland this weekend for a short three-game homestand against the last place Minnesota Twins. Triston McKenzie (1-2, 5.79 ERA) will start Friday night against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
