The Cavaliers won't be Cleveland's only professional sports team represented at the Tokyo Olympics later this summer. On Friday, USA Baseball announced its 24-man roster for this year's Summer Games, with Cleveland Indians minor league pitcher Anthony Gose headed to Tokyo.
Gose's path to the Olympics has hardly been a traditional one.
A native of Paramount, California, the now 30-year-old was originally selected by the Philadelphia Phillies as an outfielder in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft. In 2010, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, with whom he made his Major League debut with in 2012.
After playing three seasons with the Blue Jays, Gose was traded to the Detroit Tigers, who he spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with. In five seasons as an outfielder at the big league level, he amassed a .240 average (.656 OPS) with 12 home runs, 69 RBI and 57 stolen bases.
After being designated for assignment by the Tigers following the 2016 season, the left-handed throwing Gose opted to make the conversion to pitcher, spending the 2017 season in Detroit's minor league system and the 2018 season in the Texas Rangers' system. Ahead of the 2019 season, Gose signed with the Indians and is currently playing for Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate, the Columbus Clippers, having totaled a 3-1 record, 5.82 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 14 appearances this season (one start).
The Opening Ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics will take place on July 23. This year will mark baseball's return to the Summer Olympics after it wasn't a part of the 2012 or 2016 games.
