PITTSBURGH — (AP) Carlos Santana hit a towering, three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning and drove in five runs to lift the Indians to a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With one out and the score tied at 3, Santana's high drive sailed over the foul pole and landed at the top of the left-field rotunda at PNC Park. The blast was upheld after further review.
It was certainly a welcome sight to see Santana bust out at the plate, as he came in hitting only .179 with a single home run. Along with a two-run single in the third, he was the only member of the Tribe to get a hit with men on base all night.
The Indians overcame a second straight rough outing from Carlos Carrasco, who on Tuesday lasted just 4 1/3 innings and gave up three runs. Pittsburgh's Josh Bell tied the game at three with a double to force Cleveland to go to its bullpen, and from there both pitching staffs held serve before Santana's moonshot in extras.
Cleveland (14-9) won its fourth straight game and for the ninth time in 12 games, while at 4-15 Pittsburgh has the worst record in the major leagues. The two teams will meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., with the Tribe's Aaron Civale pitching against the Bucs' Steven Brault.
