But on Wednesday, the Indians organization made a different type of headline by being named a 2020 NorthCoast 99 Winner, making the franchise "one of the best workplaces in Northeast Ohio."

This year's honor marks the 10th time the Indians have won the NorthCoast 99 Award, making this year’s award a Legacy Award. In 2009, the Indians became the first professional sports franchise to earn the award.

This year marks the 22nd year that NorthCoast 99 has recognized 99 Northeast Ohio workplaces for top talent. Winners are selected after a "rigorous application process" that included detailed information regarding a number of factors, including "how their organization addresses top-performer attraction, development, and retention in five distinct areas: organizational strategy, policies, and communication; recruitment, selecting, and onboarding; employee well-being; employee engagement and development; and total rewards."

“We are extremely proud to be chosen as a top Northeast Ohio workplace. We are exceptionally proud this year to receive a Legacy Award to celebrate achieving this recognition for the tenth time,” said Sara Lehrke, Indians Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer. “Our teammates are at the core of what we believe in at the Cleveland Indians and we are grateful that our teammates have a voice through ERC’s application process to validate that our culture is truly being represented. We continually strive to be a competitive Northeast Ohio workplace with top talent as we work to unite and inspire our city with the power of team particularly in these unprecedented times.”
