CLEVELAND — The Indians are certainly giving their fans a lot to cheer about lately with six straight wins. On Friday, they'll do all they can to give back to the community!
The Tribe is holding its second annual "Giveathon" today to benefit Cleveland Indians Charities, trying to top last year's inaugural financial mark of $200,000. The event will take place throughout the day, including during tonight's game against the Detroit Tigers that will air on Channel 3 beginning at 7:10 p.m.
To donate, head to https://www.mlb.com/indians/community/giveathon; the first 400 people to donate $100 will receive baseballs autographed by the entire team
This year's Giveathon will focus on "The Digital Divide," as schools across the area have greatly shifted to remote-based learning due to the coronavirus pandemic. The team cited various studies indicating Cleveland is the fourth-worst-connected city in the United States, with 27.4% of its homes still lacking any type of broadband service.
"We believe we can have a major impact in assisting these schools & organizations," the team said, noting that its partners this year will be the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio, and Breakthrough Schools. "According to CMSD in spring of 2020, approximately $250 would supply a hot spot & a year’s worth of connectivity to a family in need."
WKYC Studios is proud to assist the Indians in helping Cleveland's kids, and presented a special one-hour "digithon" on our website and social media platforms. In addition, Kaulig Giving has already agreed to donate $25,000 this year, and will be helping conduct interviews throughout the broadcast.
You can watch the "digithon," featuring hosts Nick Camino and Dave "Dino" DeNatale below. The guys were joined by guests Kenny Lofton, Mike Freeman, and representatives from Kaulig Giving and Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.
