CINCINNATI — Josh Naylor lined into a triple play in the eighth inning, then let a routine grounder roll through his legs at first base with two outs in the ninth that led to Cincinnati's tying run as the Reds beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in 10 innings.
Naylor had a chance to boost Cleveland's one-run lead in the eighth but hit a liner that first baseman Joey Votto turned it into a triple play. Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before Max Schrock hit a grounder through Naylor for a two-base error and Jesse Winker followed with an RBI single.
Clase worked out of a bases loaded jam to force extra innings, but the Tribe (7-7) failed to score after getting two on in the top of the 10th. Tyler Stephenson's one-out single won it for the Reds (9-5) in the bottom half of the frame.
Andrés Giménez gave the Indians a 2-1 lead with a home run in the fourth, but the sputtering offense was only 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The pitching staff was able to hold the lead before Naylor's gaffe in the ninth.
Cleveland will try to avoid the sweep Saturday afternoon behind the pitching of ace Shane Bieber (1-1, 2.11 ERA). Wade Miley (2-0, 0.00) will start for Cincinnati.
