CLEVELAND — Major League Baseball has already shut down spring training and delayed the start of the 2020 season by two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Now the sport is bracing for even more.
According to national baseball writer Bob Nightengale of USA Today, several MLB GMs are preparing for delays now as late as July.
Commissioner Rob Manfred held a conference call on Monday advising all teams to shut down their facilities as precautions continue for the coronavirus outbreak.
Players were recently given the option to stay in their spring training city, head home or travel to the city of the team they play for while spring training operations were suspended.
Members of the Cleveland Indians front office have already traveled back to Cleveland.
On Sunday it was announced that a New York Yankees minor-league player had been diagnosed with the coronavirus.
MLB is currently suspended until April 9, but all expectations are that Manfred will extend the delay to the start of the season soon.
Over the weekend, reports surfaced indicating that the NBA may not plan on returning to action for a minimum of three months.
