Seattle Mariners snap Shane Bieber's strikeout streak, beat Cleveland Indians 3-2

The reigning AL Cy Young winner had fanned at least eight in 20 straight games, but fell one short Sunday after being pulled in the fifth inning.

SEATTLE — (AP) Mitch Haniger hit two doubles and the Seattle Mariners snapped Shane Bieber's record strikeout streak, beating the Cleveland Indians 3-2.

Bieber had fanned at least eight in 20 straight games dating back to last season, but the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner fell short with seven. He was pulled after issuing his fourth walk, and finished his shortest outing of the season at 4 2/3 innings trailing 3-0.

J.P. Crawford drove in two for the Mariners (21-20) with a single in the third, but the Indians (21-17) fought back with two of their own in the sixth to cut the deficit to one. They threatened again in the seventh until Franmil Reyes hit into a back-breaking doubly play with the bases loaded and only one out.

The victory was Seattle's third straight following a season-high five-game losing streak. Cleveland has lost three in a row, and now sits 2 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central.

The Tribe will try to return to its winning ways Monday night in Anaheim when they begin a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. Rookie Sam Hentges (1-0, 3.29 ERA) will make his second career start against the Halos' Patrick Sandoval (0-0, 6.14).
