CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians opened up a critical three-game series on Monday night against the first place Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field, but Terry Francona still was not in the dugout.
Francona, 61, has been dealing with gastrointestinal issues since spring training and underwent another procedure on Friday at the Cleveland Clinic.
Sandy Alomar is currently serving as the acting manager in Francona's absence.
Francona missed the Tribe's weekend series against the Detroit Tigers and has now missed 17 games during this shortened MLB season.
Recently in a press conference with the media, Indians team president Chris Antonetti addressed Francona's health expressing that the club has encouraged the longtime manager to take as much time as he needs to get through his most-recent gastrointestinal issues.
It is unclear if Francona will join the club on their road trip to Missouri where they will face the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals.
