CLEVELAND — Fans might not be allowed in the stands for the foreseeable future, but that didn't stop the Cleveland Indians from receiving some familiar support.
Prior to Friday night's season opener between the Indians and the Kansas City Royals, the Progressive Field video scoreboard played a video message from the family members of players and coaches, wishing them good luck for the 2020 season.
Friday night's opener marks the start of a season unlike any other in baseball history. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and negotiations between MLB and the league's players union, the 2020 campaign was delayed from March to July and shortened to 60 games, with an expanded postseason featuring 16 teams to follow.
Additionally, fans currently aren't permitted to attend games, although that hasn't stopped baseball from getting creative. Broadcasts of games currently feature piped in crowd noise, while some stadiums -- including Progressive Field -- have taken to putting cardboard cutouts of fans in the seats.
