Late Cleveland Cavaliers comeback falls short in 109-108 loss to Utah Jazz

Despite a furious rally, Cleveland's four-game winning streak came to an end.

CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell scored 35 points, Rudy Gobert had 20 rebounds and five blocks and the Utah Jazz beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-108.

Bojan Bogdanovic added 16 points and Rudy Gay had 15 for Utah (16-7), which made 20 3-pointers and gave away a 15-point lead in the fourth. The Cavs had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Darius Garland missed a 28-footer with 2.9 seconds to go, and Jarrett Allen couldn't get his tip to drop.

Cleveland (13-11) had its winning streak stopped at four. Garland scored 31 points, Allen added 17 points and 11 rebounds and rookie Evan Mobley had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavs. The latter's clutch block of a Mitchell layup attempt gave the team a chance on their final possession.

Down by 15 less than a minute into the fourth, the Cavaliers put together an 18-2 run to take a 100-99 lead halfway through the final period. A Garland jumper put them ahead 106-104 with 3:10 left, but a 3-pointer by Mike Conley followed by a Gobert dunk put the Jazz ahead for good.

The Cavs won't have much time to hang their heads, as they will face the defending NBA champion Bucks on the road Monday night. Cleveland has lost seven straight to Milwaukee dating back to 2019, including all three meetings last season by double digits.
