Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff is in it for the long haul.
On Saturday, it was announced that the 42-year-old signed a multi-year contract extension with the team.
The news was released in statement from Cavaliers General Manager, Koby Altman, who said Bickerstaff has proven he's the correct person to lead the franchise "into what we believe is a very promising future.”
“The decision to extend J.B. is not based solely on the early success of this season, but rather a body of work since his arrival to Cleveland. His leadership style, coaching experience and commitment to player development has instilled a growing confidence that resonates across our entire organization. We continue to see innovative and strategic examples of his impact on this roster, coupled by his unique ability to build upon a culture that leads to sustainable success.”
Per team policy, the details of Bickerstaff's contract were not released.
Bickerstaff joined the Cavaliers organization as the team’s associate head coach prior to the 2019-2020 season. In February of 2020, he was named head coach, the team's 23rd in franchise history.
Prior to joining the Cavaliers organization, Bickerstaff spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets in head coaching capacities where he saw success.
This season, Bickerstaff has led the Cavaliers to the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference at 19-13 and the franchise’s best 32-game start since 2017-18 (23-9).
In their next match-up, the Cavaliers will take on the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, December 26 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The team will be vying for their fifth straight win at home.
