CLEVELAND — When the Cleveland Cavaliers kickoff their 2019-20 season next month, it will mark their first since 2005 that Fred McLeod won't serve as the team's TV voice.
The team, however, has taken steps to ensure that the late broadcaster's presence will still be felt.
On Wednesday, the Cavs announced that they will name both the combined TV studio and media workroom the renovated Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse after McLeod, who unexpectedly passed away last week. A native of Strongsville, McLeod served as the TV voice of the Cavs during the 1979-80 season, as well as each of the past 13 years.
Details regarding a dedication of The Fred McLeod TV Studio & Media Workroom are forthcoming.

"Fred was one of the most accomplished and respected announcers in the NBA and all of sports and was known for his love, passion and enthusiasm for his hometown Cavs and Cleveland," the Cavs said in a statement. "He was friendly and welcoming to all his fellow media colleagues, regardless of experience or outlet they represented, including up-and-comers who sought advice from him and appreciated his willingness to spend time supporting them. Fred made a lasting impression, so it is fitting that he will have this permanent space dedicated to his memory."
After closing down to complete its renovations over the summer, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will host a grand re-opening on Saturday, Sept. 28.
