CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Kevin Love will not be returning to the basketball court anytime soon.
The Cavaliers announced that Love underwent a successful procedure by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City Friday to address persistent left foot symptoms.
“He will now undergo an extended period of treatment and rehabilitation, with the timeline for his return to basketball activity updated in approximately six weeks,” the Cavaliers announced in a press release.
In four games this season for the winless Cavaliers (0-6), Love averaged a double-double of 19.0 points and 13.5 rebounds to go along with 3.5 assists over 34.0 minutes of action. Love shot just 32.3 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from three-point range.
With two seasons remaining on the five-year, $113 million deal he signed in the summer of 2015, Love reached a contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through 2021-2022 with an average annual value of $28.9 million.
Despite spending much of the second half of last season rehabbing a broken bone in his left (non-shooting) hand, Love finished 2017-2018 with his second-best stat line since joining the Cavaliers, as he averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Additionally, Love had his best shooting season with the Cavaliers, knocking down 45.8 percent of his attempts from the field and 41.5 percent of his three-point tries.
During his first four years with the Cavaliers, Love averaged 17.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks over 31.3 minutes per game. Love has played 271 regular-season games with the Cavaliers since being acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team trade with the Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers for a pair of No. 1 overall picks in the NBA Draft from Cleveland, Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett.
In 63 career playoff games with the Cavaliers, Love averaged 15.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 40.3 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three-point range.
