CLEVELAND — As the Cavaliers' rebuild continues, the team has re-upped with one of its top bench players.
General manager Koby Altman announced Saturday that forward Alfonzo McKinnie has agreed to a new multi-year contract. According to The Athletic's Kelsey Russo, the total financial value is $7.2 million over four years, and cleveland.com's Chris Fedor says $600,000 will be guaranteed for the remainder of this season while the remaining three years will all be non-guaranteed for an average value of $1.6 million.
The 27-year-old McKinnie is in his third NBA campaign after going undrafted out of Green Bay in 2015 and then spending a little over a year in Europe and Mexico. He made his league debut for the Toronto Raptors in October of 2017, and played 14 games for them before ending up with the Golden State Warriors last season and eventually making their opening day roster.
McKinnie would wind up playing in 72 regular season contests (starting one) and averaging 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. The 6-foot-7 product helped the team win its fifth straight Western Conference championship, and even started and scored 12 points in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Portland Trailblazers. Despite his efforts, the Warriors waived him just before play got under way, but the Cavs claimed him two days later.
Since coming to Cleveland, McKinnie has sort of bounced back and forth: He was waived on Jan. 6, only to sign 10-day contracts on Jan. 9 and again on Jan. 23. Through it all, he has average 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, although the Cavs unfortunately sport the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
McKinnie is the second Cavalier to sign a multi-year extension in the last four months, as fellow forward Cedi Osman inked a four-year, $31 million deal back in October that is mostly guaranteed. Koby Altman also agreed to a new contract not long after the start of the season.
