Cleveland -- One of the most fashionable players in the NBA, J.R. Smith has never been shy to make a statement. So perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard opted to wear one of the new Supreme shooting sleeves in the Cavs' Thursday night matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers.
For the unfamiliar, Supreme is a skateboard shop and clothing brand that has become popular in hip-hop culture. In conjunction with Nike, the brand recently released new NBA shooting sleeves, which retail online anywhere between $60 and $100.
Earlier this week, Washington Wizards guard Kelly Oubre Jr. was spotted wearing a similar Supreme shooting sleeve on his leg. He was asked, however, to remove the apparel as the Wizards feared it might violate the NBA's uniform code.
After the game, Oubre claimed that he might just be "too wavy."
"It had the NBA logo on it, has a Nike sign on it. The NBA is sponsored by Nike, it’s just Supreme, so I don’t really know what’s the quarrel," Oubre said. "They shouldn’t have sold it to me or they shouldn’t have dropped it if we can’t wear it and it has the NBA logo on it, because I play in the NBA right? I should be able to wear anything that has the logo of what I represent."
Smith, who won the fashion competition at NBA All-Star weekend in 2015, apparently agrees. And through one quarter of action, he's still donning his sleeve. For a man most famous for being shirtless, good luck telling Smith he can't wear what he wants.
