CLEVELAND — Basketball season is almost here. On Monday, the Cleveland Cavaliers hosted their annual Media Day at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, marking the unofficial start of the 2022-23 campaign.
Coming off a breakthrough 44-38 record in which they placed eighth in the Eastern Conference before losing to the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Play-In Tournament, the Cavs enter the upcoming season as one of the league's most exciting young teams. Already laying claim to a core consisting of All-Star point guard Darius Garland, All-Star center Jarrett Allen and unanimous NBA All-Rookie first-team selection Evan Mobley, Cleveland made waves earlier this month when it pulled off a blockbuster trade to acquire three-time All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz.
In acquiring Mitchell, the Cavs went from being a promising young team to a borderline contender in a crowded Eastern Conference. Cleveland's roster also includes veteran big man Kevin Love, who finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting last season, veteran point guard Ricky Rubio, who the team re-signed after trading to the Indiana Pacers last season, as well as Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro.
Following Media Day on Monday, the Cavs will kickoff off their annual training camp at the team's facility in Independence. Cleveland is set to open the 2022-23 regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when it faces the Toronto Raptors on the road.
