One day after promotional material for it leaked, LeBron James was officially announced as the cover athlete for the NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition.
In recent years, the popular basketball video game franchise has released both a standard version and deluxe "Hall of Fame" edition of its game. Last year, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving was announced as the cover athlete for the standard version, with the initial release of the game featuring him in his Cavs jersey prior to his August trade to the Boston Celtics.
With the ability to opt out of his contract this summer and become a free agent, James' future in Cleveland also remains in question, although it appears 2K Sports won't have to make a similar jersey swap should he opt to take his talents elsewhere. In an image of the cover released on Tuesday, the 4-time MVP can't be seen wearing a Cavs jersey -- or any other team's, for that matter.
This marks the second time James has served as a 2K Sports cover athlete, with the first being in the NBA 2K14 version of the game in what would ultimately be his final season with the Miami Heat. According to 2K Sports, the 20th Anniversary Edition of NBA 2K19 will release on Sept. 7 and is available for pre-order now.
