BEREA, Ohio — Mentor native Nicole Heffington had 16 points and eight rebounds and Lakewood's Olivia Nagy recorded a double-double as 13th-ranked John Carroll grabbed a huge win over No. 10 Baldwin Wallace Wednesday night, 67-54.
The Blue Streaks raced out to an 11-0 lead and were never tied or trailing again, as Nagy scored 14 along with 13 boards and five assists. With the win, JCU (19-3, 14-2 OAC) forced a tie atop the Ohio Athletic Conference Standings and also holds the tiebreaker after beating BW twice this season.
Lilly Edwards had 12 points and eight rebounds, but the Yellow Jackets (17-4, 14-2) shot just 32% from the field, including a dismal 20% in the first half. Down by as many as 21, they actually rallied to trim the deficit to four with 5:19 left, but it turned out to be too little, too late.
With a win Saturday afternoon over Wilmington in the regular-season finale, John Carroll would clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament. Baldwin Wallace can also take home at least a share of the conference title if its beats Capital on the same day, but needs JCU to lose if it wants the overall top spot.
