AKRON, Ohio — Solon alum Sincere Carry scored 19 points and Malique Jacobs posted 12 points and 10 rebounds to carry Kent State to a 66-64 win over Akron Friday night.
The Golden Flashes (15-9, 10-4 MAC) led for most of the game and withstood a late charge by the Zips. The effort marked KSU's sixth straight win and its second this year over its archrival.
Cleveland native Enrique Freeman led Akron (16-7, 9-4) with 21 points and 13 rebounds. UA briefly took the lead late in the second half and had a chance to tie or win it at the buzzer, but Xavier Castaneda's final jumper was well off the mark.
Now third in the conference, Kent State will head to first-place Toledo Tuesday evening. Fourth-place Akron will be at last-place Western Michigan the same night.
