CLEVELAND — The Browns did exactly what they were supposed to do on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. They struck quickly and beat an inferior Miami Dolphins team to keep their playoff hopes alive.
What should we take away from the win? That was the focus of Monday's edition of After Further Review.
The Browns offense is being forced to carry the load of the team right now with the defense shorthanded due to injuries, as well as Myles Garrett's suspension. Baker Mayfield and company responded in a big way on Sunday, scoring touchdowns early and often.
Mayfield completed 24 of 34 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham both found the end zone, as did both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. The stars are finally all starting to align, it seems.
Give Joe Schobert some props on defense as well. His terrific performance against Pittsburgh was overshadowed because of the Garrett-Mason Rudolph incident at the end of the game, but he picked up right where he left off on Sunday with two more interceptions. That's four in the last two games.
The Browns have won three straight and are 5-6 with five games to go. Four of the five remaining games are in the division, with a rematch against the Steelers set for this coming Sunday at Heinz Field. Can they keep this streak of success going? Jim Donovan mentioned to me that this is the first time since the Browns have been back that they are going into Pittsburgh with the better team. That's all well and good, but we know how difficult it is to beat the Steelers on the road.
