As he arrived for training camp on Tuesday, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield sported a new accessory he hadn't been wearing in previous years: a mask.
Captured by the Browns' official Twitter account on Tuesday, Mayfield's arrival served a stark reminder of just how different NFL training camps will look in 2020.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the league and the NFL Players Association have agreed to a new preseason schedule that hardly resembles the one they had adhered to in years past. Not only has the NFL eliminated its entire preseason schedule, but players won't even begin practicing in pads until the middle of August. And while training camp might mark football's unofficial return, don't expect to see the pigskin throughout this first week of camp, which has been reserved for coronavirus testing.
