With Odell Beckham Jr. set to be officially released on Monday, the Browns put Donovan Peoples-Jones in as a starting receiver for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The second-year player out of Michigan has 228 yards and a pair of touchdowns this season, but has missed the last two weeks with a groin injury.
By the looks of things so far, he appears to be healthy again.
Following a Cincinnati turnover on downs early in the second quarter, Cleveland got the ball at its own 40 already up 14-7. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Baker Mayfield found Peoples-Jones wide-open, connecting on a 60-yard touchdown to make it 21-7.
It was Peoples-Jones' first catch of the afternoon and Mayfield's first target to a receiver all day. It was also a much-needed sigh of relief for the embattled QB, who has withstood criticism for his lack of chemistry with the soon-to-be-cut Beckham.
Peoples-Jones would have another reception in the fourth quarter, giving him 86 yards in a 41-16 win. Mayfield had a passer rating of 132.6 along with 218 yards and two touchdowns.
This is not the first time Peoples-Jones has come up big at Paul Brown Stadium: Last season during Week 7, he caught a 24-yard strike from Mayfield with just second remaining to give the Browns a thrilling 37-34 victory.
