CLEVELAND — On Monday, it was announced that Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II will be hosting a celebrity softball game in Eastlake this June.
So it came as a surprise to many that fewer than 24 hours later, Brad Stainbrook of The Orange and Brown Report reported that the third-year cornerback would like to be traded.
Stainbrook's report came on the heels of Newsome signing with a new agent, Drew Rosenhaus. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, however, while Rosenahus did meet with the Browns regarding Newsome, the Northwestern product remains happy in Cleveland and has not requested a trade.
"Greg is happy to be with the Browns,” Rosenhaus said, per Schefter. “Everything was very positive and Greg is happy with his role and playing for new DC Jim Schwartz.”
Moments later, Newsome, himself, took to Twitter to dispute Stainbrook's report -- citing the aforementioned celebrity softball game.
"Ok y’all sit back a minute and lets think about this together," Newsome tweeted. "I just launched a softball game in Cleveland. I’ll just leave it there."
Stainbrook later tweeted a retraction to his report, deleting the original post.
As for Newsome, it remains notable that the 22-year-old not only changed agents, but had his new agent meet with the Browns on his behalf.
After enjoying a strong rookie season, the 2021 first-round pick was less consistent in 2022 as he primarily played in the slot -- a position he's admitted he'd prefer not to play. The 2023 season figures to be a crucial one for Newsome, who will be eligible to sign a contract extension at the conclusion of the upcoming campaign.
