A mass shooting at a church in Laguna Woods, California, took place on Sunday, leaving five injured and one dead.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Cleveland Browns fullback Johnny Stanton IV revealed that he knew the man who was killed in the shooting, as Dr. John Cheng was his primary care physician.
"I just found out the person killed in the Laguna Woods shooting yesterday was my primary care physician, Dr. John Cheng," Stanton, a native of Rancho Santa Margarita, California, wrote on Twitter along with a picture of Cheng. "Absolute hero. He attacked the gunman and helped save so many in that church. I just wanted his name to be known. He will be missed."
According to authorities, Sunday's shooting occurred when 68-year-old David Chou of Las Vegas attended a lunch held by the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which worships at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the community of Laguna Woods. Allegedly motivated by his hatred of Taiwan, Chou is alleged to have chained the doors to the church shut before opening fire with two handguns while carrying multiple Molotov cocktail-type incendiary devices.
Amid the chaos, Cheng tackled Chou, allowing other parishioners to subdue him and tie him up with extension cords. Cheng was killed in the incident, with five others wounded, including a 92-year-old. Authorities said that Cheng's heroics saved dozens of people.
Chou, who worked as a security guard in Las Vegas, has since been booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and jailed on $1 million bail.
