CLEVELAND — Cade York missed a 55-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining as the Cleveland Browns (2-3) lost to the Los Angeles Chargers (3-2) on Sunday.
The Browns hopes of winning the game appeared slim after quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw an interception in the end zone with 2:55 remaining in the game and Cleveland trailing by two points. The Chargers, however, turned the ball over on downs with Justin Herbert's pass attempt to Mike Williams on 4th and 2 falling short, allowing Cleveland to take over at Los Angeles' 45-yard line.
The Browns proceeded to advance the ball to Los Angeles' 35-yard line, but York's game-winning attempt sailed right, marking the rookie's second miss of the game.
The Browns got off to a hot start, with a Nick Chubb 41-yard touchdown run on the game's opening drive giving Cleveland a 7-0 lead. The Browns defense then forced a turnover on downs on a 4th and 2 on their own 28-yard line, with Brissett capping a 9-play, 72-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Cleveland's 14-0 lead, however, would prove to be short-lived, with a Taylor Bertolet 28-yard field goal giving the Chargers their first points of the game and Los Angeles' defense forcing a three-and-out on the ensuing drive. From there, the Chargers' rushing attack took over, with Joshua Kelley capping a five-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run and Austin Ekeler scoring on a 12-yard screen pass to give Los Angeles a 17-14 lead.
The Browns bounced back to take a 21-17 lead into halftime, with Chubb scoring his second touchdown of the day on a 12-yard run with 2:55 remaining in the half. Cleveland failed to capitalize on an opportunity to extend its lead heading into halftime when Cade York missed a 45-yard attempt with 16 seconds remaining in the half.
The Chargers regained the lead on the first drive of the second half, with an Ekeler 22-yard run capping a 9-play, 75-yard drive. After Browns running back Kareem Hunt failed to convert on a 4th and 2 from Cleveland's own 34-yard line, Los Angeles extended its lead to 27-21 with a 25-yard Bertolet field goal.
Cleveland would respond, with a Hunt 2-yard touchdown finishing off an 11-play, 75-yard drive. The Chargers, however, proceeded to regain a 30-28 lead on a 27-yard Bertolet field goal.
It would prove to be the game's final score.
Following the loss, the Browns enter their Week 6 matchup with the New England Patriots (2-3) laying claim to a 2-3 record.
