CLEVELAND — With less than three weeks to go until the start of the 2022 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns are making cuts.
On Monday, the Browns waived five players to trim their roster to 80 players ahead of the deadline to do so at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
The five players Cleveland waived on Monday were:
- Punter Joseph Charlton
- Safety Luther Kirk IV
- Offensive tackle Wyatt Miller
- Cornerback Parnell Motley
- Tight end Marcus Santos-Silva
The Browns' decision to waive Charlton is notable, as it effectively ends the team's ongoing competition at punter. As a result, Corey Bojorquez, who spent last season with the Green Bay Packers, is now in line to be Cleveland's starting punter to open the 2022 season.
The Browns' five cuts didn't come as a surprise, but provide some clarity as to what the team's Week 1 roster might look when NFL teams are required to cut down to 53 players on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Currently, Cleveland possesses the following number of players at each position:
- Quarterback: 4
- Running back: 6
- Fullback: 1
- Wide receiver: 10
- Tight end: 6
- Offensive tackle: 6
- Offensive guard: 7
- Center: 2
- Defensive end: 7
- Defensive tackle: 6
- Linebacker: 9
- Cornerback: 8
- Safety: 6
- Kicker: 1
- Punter: 1
- Longsnapper: 1
The Browns will conclude their 2022 preseason on Saturday when they host the Chicago Bears at FirstEnergy Stadium.
