CLEVELAND — 'Tis the season in the NFL.
It's time for teams to stare down the NFL Salary Cap. It has been made a lot easier over the last few days when the cap for 2024 has been upped by $30 million. The cap went from $225 million to $255 million. This adds to the theory that the NFL has the right to print money!
Let's localize this for you. The Browns will get an $11 million boost, which will help because the Browns were well over the cap coming into the new business year. Rest comfortably tonight, Browns fans. Andrew Berry and his staff will get the books where they need to be in order to do some business in free agency.
As many of you know, I am a Nick Chubb guy. I love the way he plays. I love the way he practices. I love the way he runs over tacklers on Sunday. I love the way he wears his uniform. I love the fact he doesn't dance in the end zone when he scores a touchdown. I love the way he smashed the guitar on the night of the Jets game wearing a Batman mask. I admit he did it better than me. I love his cereal. I love his five-second sound bites during meetings with the media each Wednesday during the season.
I, like you, was devastated on that Monday night in Pittsburgh when he went right and his knee went left. But I know he will return. I'm not sure it will be for the season opener, but he will be back. That's why all this talk about the Browns possibly cutting No. 24 is sacrilegious! Yes, his salary is over $11 million for this season. Yes, against the cap, it's $15 million, but Chubb will always do anything for the team.
He is Team...Team...Team. If that means his contract must be reworked so the Browns can win, they will do it! I dream of the day the Browns are on the stage accepting the Lombardi Trophy. I imagine Browns players hooting and hollering and posing. And they should. But Chubb will be in the back, standing at attention, helmet in hand. He's a pro, and he'll most likely be the reason the Browns win a Super Bowl.
Way back when Butch Davis was the head coach of the Browns, he would tell me about his good 'ole days with the Dallas Cowboys and their Super Bowl Championships. He said it was pretty simple for them to wrap up any game they played. He said, "We just made sure to get ahead with 6 minutes to play....and then we handed the ball off to Emmitt Smith, and he ran the clock out". That's Chubb!
So please pump the brakes, turn the volume down and hit delete on all the talk about the Browns cutting Chubb.
He's my highlight guy on the radio, He's "Chubba-wubba-hubba" great. Now, I have to get out of my Chubb pajamas and I'll see you tonight on 3News!
