Cleveland Browns WR Marquise Goodwin out indefinitely with blood clots in legs, lungs

Goodwin, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent this past offseason, remains on the active roster but is not sure when he will be able to return to the field.

BEREA, Ohio — With training camp about to get underway, one of the Browns' newest additions has been dealt an unfortunate and somewhat frightening blow.

Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has been sidelined with blood clots in his legs and lungs, the team confirmed late Friday afternoon. The update comes as Cleveland prepares for its first practice Saturday at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.

In an interview with ClevelandBrowns.com that was shared by the club, Goodwin noted he had experienced leg discomfort and shortness of breath when the Browns met for OTAs in the spring. At this time, it is unknown when he will be able to return to the field.

"It was really alarming at first because I’ve experienced injury throughout my career, but it’s never been anything like this that could turn into something detrimental if it's not taken care of," Goodwin said. "It was frightening at first, but now I'm at ease with it. I've prayed and just given it over to God. It’s out of my control, and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day moving forward."

Signed by Cleveland as a free agent this past offseason, the former Olympic long jumper Goodwin has caught 187 passes for 3,023 yards and 18 touchdowns over 10 years in the NFL with Buffalo, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle. He averaged 14.3 yards per reception and hauled in four scores for the Seahawks in 2022, helping the club reach the playoffs.

The acquisition of Goodwin was part of a restructuring of the Browns' receiving core that also saw a trade for Elijah Moore and the drafting of Cedric Tillman in the third round out of Tennessee. Following the April draft, 3News' Ben Axelrod had Goodwin likely battling for the fourth, fifth, or sixth wideout spot.

While he will not be able to practice or play for the time being, Goodwin will still be with the team during camp and in meetings. Head coach Kevin Stefanski could give more of a timeline when he speaks with the media this weekend.

"The Browns are doing everything in their power to support me through it by allowing me to be around the team, on the field and in meetings," Goodwin added.

Besides Goodwin, fellow receiver Anthony Schwartz will also be out with a non-football hamstring injury, while Mike Woods II is expected to miss the entire season after tearing his Achilles while working out with quarterback Deshaun Watson. Guard Colby Gossett, signed to help provide depth to the offensive line, is also dealing with a foot issue.
