CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns safety Jabrill Peppers has found himself involved in a bizarre story after his car was broken into outside of his Cleveland apartment in late-January.
A report provided by the Cleveland Police Department shows that Peppers' Range Rover was broken into on Jan. 29. Items stolen from a vehicle include a backpack, electronic notebook, sunglasses and a Glock semi-automatic handgun.
Marsha Carroll, a 57-year-old homeless woman who had been listed as a suspect in the robbery, was found beaten on Feb. 6 and died from injuries a week later. Deointa Campbell, 26, was later arrested in connection to Carroll's beating and has been charged with murder.
Peppers is not a suspect in the homicide or any other crime.
Although the January robbery had been previously unreported, it was made public on Thursday when a Twitter user with the handle @IncarceratedBob posted a phone conversation with Peppers' attorney, Kevin Spellacy, who was unaware he was being recorded. In the clip, Spellacy tells a man posing as Peppers' uncle that the gun stolen from the Browns safety's car was unregistered and that police had dispatched marijuana that was also found in one of the stolen bags.
Cleveland Police told WKYC there was no marijuana found in Peppers' stolen property or information in the report regarding narcotics. It has since opened "an internal investigation as to whether proper police procedures were followed regarding the reported theft."
Reached by WKYC, Spellacy referred to comments he made to the Akron Beacon Journal regarding the matter.
“It was a misrepresentation [by the caller],” Spellacy told Nate Ulrich.
Asked about his comments in the recording about marijuana having been found, Spellacy claimed they were a joke. He also added that Peppers “does not have a [legal] problem at all. Zero.”
