CLEVELAND — Former Cleveland Browns running back Benjamin Gay died on July 29, according to his obituary. He was 44 years old.

According to Associated Press sportswriter Tom Withers, Gay was killed in a car crash.

Gay was a USA Today first-team All-American at Baylor University before being signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He was signed by the Browns as a third-string running back ahead of the 2001 season.

Gay rushed for 172 yards on 51 attempts with the Browns. He picked up 56 yards and a touchdown in a Week 9 win over Baltimore.

Gay signed with Indianapolis in 2002 and was waived before the season. According to his obituary, he began a career as a welder that lasted the rest of his life.

His obituary states that Benjamin Gay and his wife Margarita Gay "were parents and mentors to many children during their marriage, not all of whom were their biological children."
