CLEVELAND — As far as pleasant surprises for the Cleveland Browns this season have gone, the emergence of punter Jamie Gillan is near the top of the least.
And on Sunday, the player nicknamed "The Scottish Hammer" paid homage to to his heritage.
Arriving for the Browns' regular-season home finale vs. the Baltimore Ravens, Gillan donned a brown and orange kilt as a tribute to his homeland. Born in Inverness, Scotland, Gillan spent the first 17 years of his life overseas before moving to Leonardtown, Maryland in 2014.
Spending his college career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Gillan put his rugby skills to good use before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Browns earlier this year. After beating out Britton Colquitt for Cleveland's starting punter job in the preseason, Gillan has emerged as one of the NFL's most impressive punters, averaging 46 yards on 54 punts, 24 of which have landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Despite his impressive first season, Gillan wasn't named to the AFC Pro Bowl team earlier this week. But that hasn't stopped him from becoming one of the league's most promising -- and fashionable -- punters.
