CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry was the most consistent offensive performer through the first half of the 2018 regular season, but receptions have been harder to come by for the fifth-year professional in recent weeks.
In the last two games, Landry has been on the receiving end of just five passes for 52 yards and has not scored a touchdown since a 26-23 overtime loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 21, but with the Browns having a 2-1 record in their last three outings, he is not going to complain about catches.
“At the end of the day, the end goal is to win,” Landry said. “That has been our focus. That has been our purpose. We have accomplished that these last few weeks. We want to keep it going.
“As a competitor, I want to do my part. I do not want to be one of those guys that came here and got a check and did not earn it. I want to earn my check, to some degree, but at the same time, it is translating into wins. For me, that is what is most important. I think that when it comes, it will come, and I will make the plays when they do.”
Breaking long streaks of futility has been the Browns’ thing during the 2018 regular season, and that trend continued when they faced the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, last Sunday.
The Browns (4-6-1) had not won on the road since October 11, 2015, and that streak of 25 straight losses away from home, the second-longest in NFL history, came to an end with a 35-20 victory over the Bengals (5-6) in an AFC North Division battle.
“Any given Sunday,” Landry said.
“It is any given Sunday. Any team can win. For us, we are focused on this game, obviously, knowing that the playoff race is something that has not been talked about here. Everybody is excited and wants to talk about it. For us, we are focused on one game, and that is this game and trying to get the W.”
Since an unprecedented upheaval of the coaching staff with the firing of both Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley with half of the season still left to play, the Browns have posted a 2-1 record under the direction of interim coach/defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and they did so with a renewed sense of confidence.
“Oh yeah, we definitely are a confident team,” Landry said. “Each and every guy in this locker room, we are believing in each other. That is the most important part, just believing in each other and trusting that everyone is going to do our 1/11th.
“I just think that things fell into place. With experience and time, it gave us more of the ability to learn about each other, learn more about the system that we are playing in. It allows us to almost now find our identity, find out who we are and are putting games together, complete games. Special teams are playing well, defense is playing well and the offense.”
As for what is the next step for a team that has won consecutive games for the first time in more than four years, Landry says the Browns are not looking beyond Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium in Houston.
“This game -- win this game,” Landry said. “That is the next step. Like you guys said earlier, against a great opponent, an eight-game winning streak they are on right now. Win this game. That is the next step for us.”
