CLEVELAND — It's now official.
The Cleveland Browns have their man to run the front office after 32-year-old Andrew Berry was named executive vice president of football operations and general manager on Tuesday morning.
Berry gets a reported five-year contract and becomes the youngest GM in the NFL. This is his second tour of duty with the Browns after serving as vice president of player personnel from 2016-2018, where he coordinated the team's pro and college scouting. Berry became the vice president of football operations for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, involving himself in everything from scouting to contracts to strategy, per the NFL Network.
So what does the 'Voice of the Browns' think about Berry's return to Cleveland?
"He's going to work really hard. He has no ego, he doesn't want the spotlight on him, he just wants to do his job at the best level he possibly can," Jim Donovan told me during Monday evening's Donovan & Dino. "Does he speak the same language that they (the Browns) do right now? Absolutely."
I always thought it was interesting that Berry didn't immediately depart in 2018 when John Dorsey took over as general manager, replacing Sashi Brown. Jimmy views that as a huge plus. "The thing I admired most about Berry was that he stayed here for a year when they (the analytics group) were not in vogue at the time," Jimmy said. "He just did his job and was 100% helping them with whatever project they gave him."
One fear that a lot of fans may have about this hiring is that it comes off as a slightly 'arranged marriage' between coach and general manager, which has been a problem several times during the Haslam ownership of the Browns.
"I was introduced to Andrew about 10 years ago at the Senior Bowl by Leslie Frazier so I've known him for quite some time," Head Coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. "I've always respected him for the way he's carried himself in this profession. Andrew is extremely knowledgeable and is always looking to improve himself. We share a vision on the type of team we need to build to have the success our fans deserve. I'm excited and very much looking forward to getting to work with Andrew and developing the type of partnership needed for sustained success."
"They do know each other. They sat with each other for 18 hours last year when Stefanski was interviewed twice for eight or nine hours each time. Stefanski was well-vetted by Andrew Berry. Berry is the guy that really went out, found him, and brought him to Paul DePodesta, the Haslams, and John Dorsey," Jimmy told us.

"We are thrilled Andrew will lead our football operations," Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. "We have always been profoundly impressed with him as a consummate professional who has meticulously studied his craft every place he has worked and is extremely dedicated to utilizing every resource to improve an organization and to enhance his own knowledge. He will be a tremendous partner with Kevin as he embraces the critical nature of his relationship with the head coach. We know he can't wait to get to work."
Berry is set to have an introductory press conference in Berea next Wednesday, February 5.
"I think the sky is the limit for him. I root for him. He's classy. A 'one-double A' guy," Jimmy said of Berry.
