BEREA, Ohio — It happened again. The Browns are cleaning house.
We, of course, knew that from the events that happened on Sunday night when the Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens. Then on Tuesday, they parted ways with general manager John Dorsey.
On Thursday in Berea, we got a little more definition as to what's going to happen next from team owner Jimmy Haslam.
Take a step back with me for a moment: There is a sameness to all of these press conferences.
The theme is, 'We screwed up and didn't get it right. We're doing our best to get it right. We are a thousand percent committed to getting it right.'
But there's no promise that they're going to get it right. Until there is a guy in place to coach this football team and they win a lot of games, then it's not going to be right and there will be a lot more of the same kind of press conferences we've grown accustomed to.
We now know there is a search committee in place. Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers was in Berea on Thursday as the first candidate for an interview.
McCarthy checks off a lot of the boxes the Browns seem to be looking for:
- Former head coach
- Disciplinarian
- Great work with star quarterbacks
- Lots of experience in big games and playoff games
- Won a Super Bowl
He would be a solid match, an easy pick if he's interested in the job.
But the Browns are coming up with a new formula. The head coach will be hired first, then the general manager. This is tricky because it lays the groundwork for a powerful head coach to be in place who would then give the thumbs up for the hiring of the GM.

You wonder how much of a general manager is this person going to be. Isn't he just a glorified personnel man?
As the Browns hit the trail on this search, they are staying within the NFL. That means no college coach right now. That means Urban Meyer is just a name out there at this point.
The Browns are once again in that position to have to explain that they didn't get it right. Freddie Kitchens was a disaster as head coach and was fired. John Dorsey, the man who hired Kitchens, is also out after being offered a different position inside the organization.
It's Paul DePodesta leading the charge with the Haslams to find a head coach, then find a general manager.
Hopefully this time, they get it right.
